Any suggestions as to what this is telling me? Long Version: About a month ago I was having problems with rough idle, excessive fuel consumption, and excessive carbon build up. After replacing a faulty fuel pump, a leaky fuel connection, clearing an obstructed lo-speed jet in one carb, and lots of tweaking, it was running much better except for a high-speed intermittent miss.
Symptoms of this miss included that it was prompted more than a few times by the bump of a little rough wave or me touching the trim button. Pulled carbs again yesterday, everything looked clean, but I cleaned again. The idle is terrible, with some sort of recurring hard knock that almost stops the engine. Adjustments including timing per marks on CDI, and stop screw adjustments are way out of whack to make it run at all.
Plugs had gone from showing rich, to virtually perfect Thanks for any suggestions. Tags: None. Comment Post Cancel. Can you post a "You Tube" of the engine when it's acting up?
I will when I can Scott. I broke off one of the carb bowl drain screws, and waiting on the delivery of another. It seems almost like a backfire, it is not rhythmic. It will do it every two or three seconds after it gets warm.
I must've screwed up something in the carbs, which may have been perfectly fine. The problem before that was a miss that made me worry I could lean out a cylinder.Yash products
I've wondered if an ignition problem, but I thought I would eliminate the carbs as a possibility before doing a lot more along the lines of ignition. I have verified spark on all three. I wondered if that could signify weak spark, or if it's "got it or you don't" deal" Light bulb comes on… When I pressured up the fuel after reassembly, I observed a leak from a hole in the "pipe" hose that feeds the bottom 3 carb. I see why they call them pipes, as they are not flexible. It's a straight pipe, so this would not impede flow to the middle carb, but the new angle it introduced to the line that goes up to 1 may have created too much of an angle there as well.
I guess I'm not supposed to run it with a plug wire pulled temporary insanitybut evidence from that exercise would support this theory: pulling 1 or 3 smoothed it out somewhatpulling 2 allowed it to continue running terrible made no difference.
Yes No. OK Cancel.Still, there are others of us out there that have older, more temperamental outboards and, believe it or not, even relatively new outboards can act up at times. So, what should you do when your outboard engine is puttering instead of purring? Some problems can even be solved with the twist of only two fingers. Simply twist it open and monitor your engine for improvement.
Wasps, spiders, and other critters are well-known for clogging these fittings up, and that can significantly affect engine performance. If you do find a clogged vent, simply clean it out with a pair of tweezers. Also, check all your fuel hoses from the tank to the engine. A kinked or pinched hose can cause significant performance problems in an outboard engine, especially at higher RPMs, while pinholes in fuel lines can introduce air to the fuel, as well as create a safety problem.
A haven for corrosion, the ports inside these connectors often clog up with nasty bits of corroded, gas-soaked metal powder that can impede fuel flow. The ball bearings and check valves inside some of these connectors can also fail. The purpose of these filters is not only to filter particulate matter out of fuel before it reaches your outboard, but also to separate any water that may be present in your fuel. These filters sometimes become clogged or filled with water, causing an engine to run poorly.
The presence of water is a tipoff that you may have a bad load of fuel in your boat. You may want to have it professionally filtered, as the presence of too much water can cause engine problems. Luckily most are a relatively inexpensive purchase. Some portable outboard fuel tanks have inline primary fuel filters installed in the fuel supply line, too. Last, always use fresh fuel. And, always add fuel stabilizers designed to combat problems associated with ethanol fuel at every fill up. No excuses.
Many outboards—especially newer models—have a slew of onboard fuel filters that can become clogged and detrimentally affect performance. On the simplest of outboard engines these are easily replaceable, often installed inline between the fuel inlet and the carburetor. Some smaller or older outboards may not even have one. Newer, fuel-injected outboards can have as many as 12 of these filters—two or three primaries and one or more for each fuel injector.
Other fuel filters, such as those aforementioned fuel injector units, and vapor separator tank filters, should be changed by the pros. If they get clogged with dust and dirt, this can affect engine performance significantly by starving the engine of air. Fouled or damaged spark plugs can cause all sorts of problems in any engine, much less in an outboard.
Their condition can also indicate lurking internal problems, too. Plug electrodes—the ends that sit in the engine—that are worn, appear burned, or have dirty or oily deposits should be replaced with properly gapped plugs. Hold on to your old plug s if they were fouled with oil or fuel gum and then have an outboard mechanic take a look to diagnose the possibility of more serious problems inside your engine.
The good news is that there are many tutorials online for diagnosing and repairing ignition system components in older outboards yourself, versus taking the engine into a shop for repairs. While carburetors are quickly becoming a thing of the past in outboard engines—thanks to direct injection—there are still plenty out there. The first and easiest thing to do is to spray carburetor cleaner in your carburetor.
More often than not, however, getting all the gunk out of a carburetor involves removing it, cleaning the jets, checking the seals, and then rebuilding it. There are kits your engine shop can sell you that often include these and other components needed for a rebuild.

Fishing Magazine. Just barely advance the throttle and it idles worse and sometimes will stall. Sounds like it's loading up but starts right back up and ran at mid to high rpm fine. Last trip it bogged down and wouldn't plane the boat, after playing with the throttle a little it took off and ran fine until it was turned off and restarted then same bogging but never corrected itself.
Boat sat at a marina for 2 weeks and i was told they couldnt get it to act up so just take it and see what happens. They claim compression was fine, I have no idea if it was tested, and that it probably is a sensor.
Any thoughts? Or good mechanics in corning area? Start with basic tune up and go from there. Making your stories, Reel Stories, since !! Possible computer issue. Intermittently failing or weak power supply? Although an outboard, there's gotta be some elimination tests. Did you replace fuel lines? I had a similar issue before where the motor would bog down due to old fuel lines cutting the flow of fuel. I'd have a competent marine tech put it on the diagnostic tool and see what codes come up.
The computer in it records everyhting from how the engine was broken in to how many times the alarms have gone off to thermostat temp readings etc. Any idea who in the corning area would be considered competent?
Yamaha Outboard won't idle????Sputters and dies...
I'm familiar with most of the marinas but not sure where to start. The last two I have been to definitely would not be described as competent! There was a very simular topic awhile back, turned out to be the reeds in the carb. Not sure if yours has them, or which fuel, meaning 2 stroke or 4 stroke.Lemon royale 13 strain
I remember my buddy's putting other types in for performance and those were 2 stroke motors. Ain't no Carb. In a EFI motor. It's an efi motor and always treat the fuel and run mercury quickkleen multiple times a season.Login or Sign Up.

My Outboard Motor Runs at High Speed, But Will Not Idle
Thanks in advance for help. I have a c40tlrv 40 hp 2-stroke, 3-cylinder motor. It has always been reliable and performed well. Recently, I have developed a problem where it will hardly ever stay running at idle. If I start it and put it in gear as soon as the advanced idle period ends, I can run through the midrange and at WOT no problem. Sometimes, after running for a bit, I can idle some and it will stay running. Usually, however, when I bring it down to idle it runs for a few seconds, gets slower and slower, and dies.
Then I developed a regular pop out of the exhaust at low throttle. It was obviously missing and running very rough when it would idle. Any lower and it dies every time now. First, I replaced the fuel pump and gasket behind it and the motor side and fuel side ball valve fittings. I am running with a good hose on fresh gas out of an extra can at the house. It is hooked directly to the pump in case the problem was the filter. When I initially replaced the fuel pump it was compromisedthe first time I started it up, it seemed to run dramatically better and the regular pop from exhaust went away.
However, it still runs rough and will not idle. Still have to use the fast idle lever to keep it running. Checked compression. I have from top to bottom 95, 95, and 90 on a dry test, and95, and on wet test. Checked spark. Next I cleaned the carbs. All seemed really clean inside, but bottom carb may have been slightly clogged. Put back on and although it still ran a little rough, I got idle back.An unexpected change in the performance of your boat motor can put a damper on a day of fun on the water or even prevent you from leaving the dock.
A misfire will cause the engine to momentarily stumble or lose rpms and then regain its normal engine speed. The misfire will usually reappear, either under specific operating conditions or randomly.
A misfire may occur when your engine is idling, causing a rough or uneven idle. When the engine misfires, you may have trouble getting your boat up to speed.
Misfires often happen when your vehicle is under load while accelerating. This can result in slow or sluggish acceleration or a jerking motion while pressing down on the accelerator. A rough or uneven idle can be an indicator of an engine that is misfiring. Does it sound different than normal? Unusual sounds can be a clue that there is something going on with your engine.
Before you take your boat or engine to the shop, gather as much information as possible to assist your mechanic in diagnosing the problem. When a misfire occurs, take note of the circumstances such as whether the engine is cold or has warmed up; the speed at which it occurs low speed or high speed ; the frequency it occurs; and if it occurs only when accelerating or at a steady speed. Keep a log of the problems, this information will help your mechanic pinpoint the source of the problem.
Armed with this information, your mechanic will have your boat engine hitting on all cylinders and running smooth in no time. We had winterized the motor. Everything seemed fine this spring until we gave the motor more gas. She started really running rough! It had always been a good little motor. We had the carb rebuilt a couple years back and she had done just fine. This year something was different. We had decided to bypass the boat gas dock and just mix the gas ourselves.Post a Comment.
